Built
in 1910, at the western end of Spokane's Central Business District,
the Grand Coulee was orginally built and designed as a 102 single
room occupancy hotel called The Hotel Upton. It was in 1933 that
it was renamed The Grand Coulee and the entrance was moved from
First Avenue to it's original location on Cedar. Four stories with
a full basement, the building now houses 49 apartment units, many
of which are studios or 1 bedroom in a variety of sizes and layouts.
A hair salon, antique store, corner deli and similar businesses
house the seven commercial and retail bays on the ground floor.
During the buildings renovation and improvements, an elevator was
installed along with updated gas and electric lights.
